Any life-threatening events, like accidents, surgeries, and illnesses, have a profound
impact on a person’s ecosystem. It impacts his family, work, social life, and finances. It
emotionally drains the person and their loved ones. The first emotion we feel when we
encounter these events is shock, followed by anger, sadness, fear, and other emotions that
get stored in our system. When someone is detected with cancer, the cycle of going to
hospitals, getting treatments, and various checkups is an emotionally demanding process.
Even after an accident, a person might go through some intense physical changes. The
physical wounds might heal with time, but the emotional ones stay.
The doctor had a patient who was involved in a terrible car accident. She felt a
jerk around her neck when the car crashed. She had to be on bed rest for a week straight
as she felt giddy whenever she tried to get up. She gradually got back to her routine. The
giddiness subsided, but the spasms continued to bother her. Also, she didn’t feel
comfortable travelling in a car. The doctor decided on an Accident Trauma Treatment
(ATR) for her to work on her fears and shock. She made a miraculous recovery, overcoming
not only her fear of cars, but also her neck pain.
Dr. Diplakshmi’s goal while working with a trauma patient is to ensure that the
individual is at peace with his or her situation and that they now feel in control of their
life!!!
